Layer Cake
A “layer cake” in our PST process is a collection of teacher and student work showing what teachers and students do. Each “layer” is a step in the process. For example, a layer cake for the PST process might include:
ü The teacher’s original PST written into the common template (the bottom layer, i.e. the first layer)
ü The teacher’s notes about how to differentiate instruction to prepare students for the PST
ü The student set of work on a PST
ü The common rubric showing the student’s self-assessment and goal setting to improve
ü The common rubric showing the teacher’s assessment of student work
ü The teachers plans to improve the PST and related instruction
ü The actual “improved” PST
ü Etc. (the last layer)
The layer cake helps teachers and others see the thoughtful interaction of teachers and students during the PST processes.
On the top of the layer cake is a form that identifies the PST title and the grade level and/or discipline for which it is intended. This “fact sheet” is the “icing” on the layer cake.
